Geoffrey Mosiria, the Chief Officer in charge of Environment in Nairobi County, has formally notified a church in Kawangware regarding its noise levels, following complaints from local residents.
During a visit on Tuesday night, Mosiria assessed the situation and confirmed that the church’s noise was excessively loud, even though there were only a few people present at the time.
“We have issued a formal notice to the church, instructing them to reduce the noise. If they fail to comply, we will take legal action to resolve the matter,” Mosiria stated.
Local residents have been struggling with the noise from the church, which reportedly plays loud music every day from 6 pm to 9 am. Mosiria emphasized that such noise pollution was unacceptable, and the residents’ well-being should not be compromised.
The issue was first reported on December 1, 2023, when residents began filing complaints with the Muthangari Police Station. However, instead of resolving the problem, some of the complainants were detained, while the church leadership continued their activities unaffected.
In a video taken during Mosiria’s visit, loud music from the church is clearly heard, while the residents’ voices are barely audible. One resident shared how she had to move her children elsewhere so they could focus on their schoolwork due to the noise.
“We can’t sleep,” another resident explained, adding that they had tried multiple solutions, including protests, burning tires, and approaching local authorities, but nothing had worked.
Residents have expressed frustration with the ongoing disruption. They reported that the noise levels are particularly unbearable during the early morning hours, especially around 3 am.
“We have no peace,” one resident concluded, echoing the sentiments of the affected community.
