Cholera, caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, remains a significant public health challenge
in low-resource settings, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite efforts to control the
disease, cholera outbreaks continue to occur, with Kenya experiencing several significant
epidemics in recent years. Oral cholera vaccines (OCVs) are a critical tool in cholera
prevention strategies. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the immunogenicity of extended
dosing intervals for Euvichol-S, a WHO-prequalified OCV, in a Phase IV non-inferiority trial.
This trial is a parallel-group, open-label, randomized, non-inferiority study. It aims to
compare the immune response of three dosing schedules of the Euvichol-S OCV: a standard
two-week interval, a three-month interval, and a twelve-month interval.
The project has opportunities for the following positions:
- Nurse KMR 9 (1 position)
Job Description:
The Nurse will be responsible for screening participants for based on the inclusion criteria for
purpose of recruitment of into the study and will also be responsible for administering the
clinical report form to the participants. The Nurse will also administer the cholera vaccine
orally to the participants and monitor the participants for any adverse events.
Minimum requirements;
i. Must have a Diploma in Nursing (KRN/KRCHN);
ii. At least 3 years professional experience in epidemiological research relevant to the
transmission and/or control of tropical infectious diseases;
iii. Previous working experience in a multi-disciplinary team including with Ministry of
health teams and community health worker teams;
iv. Strong hands-on experience with current methods of epidemiology surveillance; having
worked in a multidisciplinary, multi-site project will be an added advantage;
v. Must be registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya
Duties and responsibilities;
i. Obtaining informed consent and enrolment of participants into study;
ii. Explaining study procedures to eligible participants;
iii. Obtains medical history and performs physical examination;
iv. Offers individual, group and family counseling to participants and patients;
v. Confirms eligibility for all study participants;
vi. Conducts protocol specific tests and procedures;
vii. Providing project management team with regular feedback on participant recruitment;
viii. Do HIV counseling, testing and laboratory results interpretation;
ix. Verify quality of data by comparing abstracted data to source documents;
x. Administer the oral cholera vaccine and perform phlebotomy;
xi. Record any adverse events and notify the lead clinician of the same as per protocol;
xii. Performs other duties as may be assigned
2.Laboratory Technologists (2 positions) KMR 8
Minimum Requirements;
i. Minimum of a Diploma in any biomedical Sciences;
ii. Good English and Swahili, both spoken and written;
iii. Must be able to write brief reports and keep records;
iv. Must be computer literate;
v. Must be a team player.
Duties and responsibilities;
i. Ensure proper storage of specimen material;
ii. Ensure all specimens are labeled appropriately and logged in appropriately;
iii. Ensure proper labelling, tracking and recording of all specimens in the laboratory;
iv. Culture of feacal samples for isolation of bacteria;
v. Biochemical characterization and identification of bacteria;
vi. Molecular characterization of bacteria and perform Elisa assays;
vii. Ensure that there are requisite supplies and procured in good time;
viii. Accurately enter data to computerized database in a timely manner;
ix. Perform regular checks of data entered on paper forms to those entered in the
database;
x. Respond to data queries, attend study briefs and share progress of work;
xi. Present weekly and monthly reports of laboratory activities;
xii. Perform any other duties assigned or delegated by the Project Coordinator
Fieldworkers, KMR 9 (7 positions)
Minimum requirements;
i. Minimum of a Diploma in any Biomedical Sciences;
ii. Good English and Swahili, both spoken and written;
iii. Must be able to write brief reports and keep records;
iv. Must be computer literate;
v. Must be a team player.
Duties and responsibilities;
i. Consent study participants;
ii. Collect stool samples as per the protocol;
iii. Complete study forms and books accurately and completely;
iv. Ensure proper labelling and tracking of samples and accuracy before leaving the
household and Clinics;
v. Ensure that there are requisite supplies and procured in good time;
vi. Attend study field briefs and share progress of work;
vii. Must be flexible to work during weekends and public holidays;
viii. Be responsible for the study supplies and equipment’s while in the field;
ix. Perform any other duties assigned or delegated by the Project Coordinator
Competencies;

Terms of employment: This is a one (1) year contract, renewable subject to availability of
funds, with a probation period for the first 3 months. Salary is negotiable within the KEMRI
scheme of service depending on education, experience and demonstrated competency.
Successful candidates will be required to provide the following: Certificate of good conduct,
Higher Education Loans Board compliance certificate, KRA Tax compliance certificate, Ethics
and Anti-Corruption Commission clearance.
