Intern, Programs
We are seeking a Programs Intern to support the planning, executing, and evaluating of various programs and projects within our organization. This role is ideal for a motivated individual seeking hands-on experience in program coordination, stakeholder engagement, and impact assessment. The intern will collaborate closely with the Programs team and contribute to meaningful projects that advance our mission. This is an unpaid hybrid internship based in Nairobi, Kenya.
Scope of Work
- Perform administrative support tasks (e.g. printing, photocopying, entering and updating records, etc.).
- Conduct phone and e-mail correspondence with implementing partners as requested.
- Research and create support materials and document program processes under the supervision of the manager.
- Coordinate with the Regional Communications team to collect, document, and disburse impact stories.
- Support the Programs team with intervention activities.
- Participate in the development of forecasts, work plans, and reports.
- Collaborate with organizational staff on events and projects as needed.
Time Frame
- January 8 – May 2, 2025
- Up to 15 hours per week
Deliverable
Submit a final report and/or presentation culminating your experience in front of Worldreader staff at the end of your internship.
Desired Qualifications
- Must be a Kenya resident and an undergraduate student currently enrolled at a 4-year university studying Project Management, International Development, Community Development, or a related field.
- Must work from Kenya office at least once per week.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a hybrid work environment.
- Hands-on and solution-oriented with a willingness to learn.
- Must have own computer and reliable internet connection.

Intern, Marketing & Communications
We are seeking a passionate and creative Marketing & Communications Intern to support our Kenya team. The intern will primarily focus on managing and engaging with the BookSmart WhatsApp Book Club, fostering a vibrant and interactive community of parents and children. In addition, the intern will assist with managing Worldreader’s social media pages and creating engaging content such as videos and graphics, to promote BookSmart and its features. The Marketing and Communications Intern will also support the Kenya team during events and experiential marketing activities.
This is an unpaid hybrid internship based in Nairobi, Kenya.
Scope of Work
WhatsApp Book Club Management:
- Actively manage and monitor the BookSmart WhatsApp Book Club.
- Facilitate discussions, share weekly reminders, reading challenges, and other engaging activities.
- Respond to inquiries, comments, and feedback from group members in a timely and professional manner.
- Develop strategies to increase engagement and participation within the group.
Social Media Management:
- Assist in managing BookSmart’s social media pages.
- Create and schedule posts that highlight BookSmart features, user stories, reading challenges, and more.
- Monitor social media trends and analytics to inform content strategy.
Content Creation:
- Develop creative content including videos, graphics, and written posts to promote BookSmart.
- Collaborate with the marketing team to ensure content aligns with Worldreader’s branding and messaging.
- Brainstorm and execute innovative ideas for campaigns and special projects.
Community Engagement:
- Engage with our online community to build strong relationships and promote the benefits of BookSmart.
- Encourage user-generated content and facilitate community-driven initiatives.
Event Support (Experiential Marketing):
- Assist in planning and executing events aimed at promoting BookSmart and engaging with our community.
- Support on-the-ground activities during events including interacting with attendees and gathering feedback.
- Help create content and promotional materials for events.
Time Frame
January 8 – May 2, 2025
Up to 30 hours per week
Deliverable
Submit a final report and/or presentation culminating your experience in front of Worldreader staff at the end of your internship.
Desired Qualifications
- Undergraduate student currently enrolled at a 4-year university in Kenya studying Communications, Marketing, Digital Media, or a related field.
- Must work from Kenya office at least once per week.
- Strong passion for reading and literacy promotion.
- Proficiency in social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), etc.).
- Experience with content creation tools (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, video editing software) preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Creative mindset with the ability to generate engaging content ideas.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Prior experience in community management or social media engagement is a plus.
