Deputy Inspector General of Police, Gilbert Masengeli, appeared in court on Friday 9th September 2024 morning to address his six-month jail sentence, which was issued due to the disappearance of three individuals during the finance bill protests. These missing persons include Jamil Longton, Aslam Longton, and activist Bob Njagi.
Although the three individuals have reportedly been found, Masengeli’s sentence remains in place, and he is required to present himself before the court to address the matter. The court had already sentenced him, and the punishment was scheduled to begin on Friday.
Masengeli’s defense team includes Attorney General Dorcus Oduor, along with Advocates Cecil Miller and Steve Ogolla, who are working to resolve the situation on his behalf.
On Thursday, Masengeli reversed his earlier position and informed the court of his willingness to appear. His legal team, led by Advocates Cecil Miller and Steve Ogolla, notified High Court Judge Chacha Mwita that Masengeli was prepared to appear in court between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM on Friday.
The case was initially scheduled to be handled by Judge Mugambi, who was occupied with a different case as part of a three-judge bench. Therefore, the file was transferred to Judge Mwita for consideration. Masengeli’s legal team requested that the court allow him to appear on Thursday to address the sentence, which was set to begin the following day.
However, Judge Chacha Mwita ruled that the file would be presented before Judge Mugambi on Friday for further instructions, given Judge Mugambi’s ongoing commitments.
Following the court’s decision, Masengeli complied and appeared before the court as required. Further proceedings are expected to determine the outcome of his jail sentence.
