A non-profit organization called Threats, a Civic Tech research lab, has created a digital platform that tracks over 5,000 lies told by Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto.
The platform, named Ruto Lies, displays a compilation of tweets and comments pointing out the president’s false statements.
The site also features an innovative interactive portrait of President Ruto, made from hundreds of dots. Each dot represents one of the president’s alleged lies or a related comment. By clicking on a dot, users can see specific examples of misleading statements attributed to him.
This digital collection is based on information gathered between June 26, 2024, and July 3, 2024.

The website describes the project as follows:
“An interactive digital portrait of Kenya’s President Ruto, composed of over 5,000 tweets reflecting the sentiments of Kenyans during the #RejectTheFinancialBill2024 protests.”
Each tweet contains references to the president and keywords like “Ruto” and “lies,” accusing him of spreading false or misleading information.
Threats operates from Uganda and Washington, DC. The lab works to combat digital threats that challenge truth, democracy, and social cohesion.
Their focus areas include democratic stability, human rights, and the ethical use of technology, particularly in developing countries. They also study how emerging digital risks can disrupt elections, spread disinformation, and fuel ethnic tensions.
The organization highlights the increasing complexity of fighting digital threats like deep fakes and misinformation across the Global South, where deliberate disinformation and social divisions create a toxic environment for democracy.
