Nelly Wanjiru, a 29-year-old woman, is currently recovering in a hospital after a horrific incident where her partner, Simon Mwangi Maina, allegedly poured boiling water on her face following a disagreement. The attack has left her with severe burns and emotional trauma.
This took place on the night of Thursday, August 29. Nelly and Simon had been spending what appeared to be a normal evening together when things suddenly took a violent turn.
Nelly explained that she was warming food for Simon when he stepped away, claiming he was going to drink some hot water. Moments later, he returned with the kettle and, without warning, splashed the boiling water on her.
In the chaos that ensued, Nelly quickly grabbed her child and nanny and helped them escape the house. Simon, seemingly unmoved by what he had done, continued to approach her as her neighbors intervened. They rushed Nelly to the hospital while Simon fled the scene.
Nelly, who sustained burns on 25% of her body, reported the incident to the Kiambu Police Station under the reference number OB 03/29/08/2024. She has now been in the hospital for two weeks, receiving treatment for her physical injuries as well as dealing with the emotional scars left by the attack.
Nelly and Simon had once shared happy moments together, as evidenced by photos of their time as a couple. Nelly, who works in finance, had even supported Simon in starting his business. However, their relationship began to strain when Simon wanted them to move in together. Nelly, feeling unprepared and wanting to focus on her career, decided against it. She explained that she wanted them both to grow individually—herself in her career, and Simon in his business.
“He wanted us to live together, but I felt neither of us was ready. I even helped him with transportation, making sure he left with dignity so it didn’t seem like I was pushing him away. I told him we could still continue dating, but I needed to focus on my career while he focused on building his business,” Nelly shared.
Simon Mwangi Maina remains at large, and efforts to locate him have so far been unsuccessful. Nelly has found strength in hoping her suffering will serve as a call for justice.
“Every time I felt pain, I prayed that it would be enough to have this man arrested so no other woman would have to go through what I have. Now, I feel like God has helped me, and I’m starting to feel more like myself again,” she said.
