A devastating accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon on the Londiani-Muhoroni Road, in the Pangala area of Kisumu Ndogo, resulting in the deaths of at least 13 people and critical injuries to three others.
A trailer, traveling towards Londiani, lost control and veered off its lane, colliding head-on with an oncoming matatu heading towards Kisumu.
The crash resulted in the immediate deaths of 13 people inside the matatu, including the driver.
Three survivors, consisting of a child and two adults, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Muhoroni Sub-County Hospital for treatment.
The driver of the trailer survived but fled the scene immediately after the accident.
Eyewitnesses reported that the trailer lost control, swerving into the path of the matatu, leading to the fatal collision.
A police report detailed that the trailer, with registration number KCG 089F/ZF 6346, was being driven by an unidentified individual. The vehicle was heading from Kipsitet General area and lost control around 1:30 PM near Kisumu Ndogo.
The matatu, identified by registration number KCS 415Z and driven by Mr. Meshack Otieno, was hit head-on by the trailer. Mr. Otieno was among those who died at the scene.
Gregory Kemei, the Assistant Chief of Kapchebwai sub-location, confirmed that the survivors were taken to Muhoroni Sub-County Hospital for urgent medical care.
The bodies of the deceased have been moved to St. Vincent Mission Hospital mortuary in Muhoroni for identification and post-mortem examinations.
Police officers have cleared the accident site, and both vehicles has been towed to Kipsitet Police Station for further inspection.
This tragic incident highlights the dangers of road travel and the importance of safety measures to prevent such accidents.
