Vice President Kamala Harris stirred controversy during a Labor Day rally in Detroit, Michigan, where she appeared to adopt a different speaking style, which some observers criticized as an attempt to appeal to the local audience.
The X account “Johnny MAGA” mocked Harris’ speech, labeling it “cringe and fake.”
Harris spent the holiday in Detroit, a key battleground state, to rally support from blue-collar union workers. She emphasized the importance of unions in securing workers’ rights, saying, “You better thank a union member for the five-day work week. You better thank a union member for sick leave. You better thank a union member for paid leave. You better thank a union member for vacation time.” Her noticeable change in tone during this speech did not go unnoticed.
Trump senior advisor Stephen Miller remarked that Harris had adopted multiple accents in recent weeks, questioning her authenticity.
Gad Saad, a professor and podcast host, expressed disdain for what he saw as inauthenticity.
Harris’ change in accent during the Detroit rally drew further scrutiny when she spoke later in the day in Pittsburgh, where her speaking style returned to a more familiar tone. This led to additional comparisons, with some commentators pointing out the inconsistency.
Harris has faced similar accusations in the past, with critics alleging that she alters her speaking style based on her audience. Previous instances include a speech in Atlanta, where she was accused of adopting a Southern accent, and a 2021 trip to France, where some claimed she affected a “French accent” while visiting a COVID-19 lab.
