Former Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Mithika Linturi, made his first public appearance on Sunday during a visit by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in his home county of Meru, since he was dismissed from his duties.
At a church fundraising event in Meru, Linturi expressed gratitude to Deputy President Gachagua for his support during his time as Agriculture Minister. He assured Gachagua of his continued loyalty and pledged his support to President William Ruto’s administration, despite his dismissal.
“We, the people of Meru, stand by the President, and we were instrumental in forming this government. We have no intention of abandoning it,” Linturi declared. “We fought hard for this government, and we remain a part of it.”
Linturi used the analogy of a second wife to discuss the inclusion of the opposition in the government, emphasizing that even if new members are brought into the fold, they must respect the existing members.
He also took the opportunity to explain Article 6 of the Constitution, which states that all counties are integral parts of Kenya and have the right to be involved in the government. “The Constitution ensures that all governments are distinct but must collaborate and cooperate. This confirms that the government belongs to all of us,” Linturi explained.
Linturi raised concerns about the dangerous conditions of the Tharaka Nithi road, which has been the site of numerous fatal accidents recently. He urged President Ruto to take action and ensure the road’s design is improved to prevent further tragedies.
“It’s tragic that we lost 12 lives from Meru due to the state of Nithi Road. We need this issue addressed immediately,” he stated.
Linturi also spoke about the ongoing issues of banditry and security in Igembe North, alleging that the area remains a hotspot for bandits to steal and hide livestock. He called for an increased police presence in the region to address these concerns.
“Tell the President that we remain his friends and will support him in fulfilling the promises he made to the people of Kenya,” Linturi concluded.
