🌍 Exciting News: AI for African Languages!
Jacaranda’s open-source Large Language Model (LLM), UlizaLlama (AskLlama), now offers AI functionality in several African languages, including Swahili, Hausa, Yoruba, Xhosa, and Zulu.
The new multi-lingual model will enhance support for new and expectant moms at scale, and pave the way for AI-driven services in other areas across Africa.
How was this achieved?
We used Large Language Models(LLM), A large language model is a computational model capable of language generation or other natural language processing tasks. As language models, LLMs acquire these abilities by learning statistical relationships from vast amounts of text during a self-supervised and semi-supervised training process. UlizaLlama is built on Llama2, a Meta-developed LLM.
In September 2023, the Jacaranda technology team trained Llama2 to recognize and generate Swahili words, yielding promising results. In October, the team improved the model to grasp more complex Swahili instructions and incorporated safety ‘guardrails’. The end product was a model capable of communicating effectively and responsibly in Swahili, the first of its type.
Goals:
- Empower local developers and researchers
- Improve access to information and education
- Preserve linguistic diversity
- Create new economic opportunities
