In Eldoret town, stories of church leaders tricking people have become so frequent that it now seems like a joke.
Small churches have been started by church leaders, and as membership grows, the leaders create what they refer to as investment businesses, where they persuade followers to deposit their hard-earned money in the hope of building wealth.
Some members said they joined ROFAM Centre a Christian Church, where Bishop Seko Silas spent little time to convince them to put their money in his De la Vie consult company.
Ebby Atema, a victim, narrated the ordeal: “Vile alilipa vizuri nikawakusanya akina mama wakachanga Ksh.1.8 milion tukaweka, hizo pesa zote zimeenda!”
There’s a difference between churchgoers and Christians.
The churchgoers were promised very huge returns. According to individuals who were tricked, although they were initially paid, the company’s resources quickly ran out and they were never paid again.
“Sister-in-law alituintroduce… alisema tunaweza invest, so nichukua loan nika weka so far pesa ambazo nimeweka ni Ksh.4.6 million,” said another victim, Patrick Wafula.
